How to negotiate when the salary budget is fixed
You ask for a higher salary, and the employer says the budget cannot move.
What they might say
- “Our budget for this role is fixed at 65.”
- “That's the top of our salary range.”
- “We can't increase the base salary.”
What's usually behind it
The limit may be real, or it may be what this person can approve. Other parts of the offer may still be flexible, but they need to meet your needs.
What you can say
- I'm still looking for something closer to 72.
- What flexibility is there on bonus, start date or remote days?
- Could you send the full revised package before I decide?
Try not to
- Lowering your target as soon as you hear a limit.
- Accepting extras that don't make the package work for you.
