How to respond when an offer needs an answer today
You are reviewing an offer or contract when the other person asks for a decision today.
What they might say
- “We need an answer by five.”
- “This offer is only available today.”
- “If you can't commit now, we'll have to move on.”
What's usually behind it
There may be a real scheduling need, or the deadline may be intended to speed up your decision. Either way, urgency does not make the terms right for you.
What you can say
- What's driving today's deadline?
- I need until tomorrow afternoon to review the terms.
- If today is firm, I can't commit to these terms.
Try not to
- Agreeing before you've checked your minimum requirements.
- Accusing them of bluffing about the deadline.
