How to counter a low first offer

The first salary or contract offer comes in well below your target.

What they might say

  • “We're offering 60 for this role.”
  • “We had a much lower fee in mind.”
  • “This is a fair starting point.”

What's usually behind it

The opening number can shape the rest of the discussion, even when it is far from your target. It may reflect their expectations or leave room to negotiate; it does not establish what you should accept.

What you can say

  • That's below the figure I'm targeting.
  • Based on the scope we discussed, I'm looking for 72.
  • What would need to change to get to that figure?

Try not to

  • Splitting the difference without checking your minimum.
  • Reducing your ask just to keep the conversation moving.
