How to clarify a candidate’s role in a team result
You ask about an achievement, but the candidate describes what the team did without explaining their own role.
What they might say
- “We kind of managed it as a team.”
- “The team handled the renewal.”
- “We all helped get it over the line.”
What's usually behind it
The candidate may be used to sharing credit or may not know how much detail you want. A team answer alone does not tell you what they owned.
What you can say
- What was your part, specifically?
- Which decisions were yours to make?
- What changed as a result of your work?
Try not to
- Treating “we” as proof they contributed little.
- Suggesting the answer you want to hear.
