How to answer interview questions with little experience

An interviewer asks whether you have enough practical experience for the role.

What they might say

  • “Have you done this kind of work before?”
  • “Most of your experience is from university.”
  • “How would you handle the learning curve?”

What's usually behind it

They need evidence that you can apply your skills, not just name them. Coursework, societies and part-time work can show how you learn, solve problems and follow through.

What you can say

  • I haven't done that in a paid role yet, but I used [skill] in [project].
  • I was responsible for [task], and the outcome was [result].
  • What would you want me to learn first?

Try not to

  • Apologising repeatedly for being new.
  • Presenting coursework as paid work.
