How to respond when a mentee asks for an introduction

Your mentee asks you to introduce them to someone in your network without explaining the purpose.

What they might say

  • “Could you introduce me to your contact at that company?”
  • “I just want to pick their brain.”
  • “You know them, so I thought I'd ask.”

What's usually behind it

They may see access as the next step without having a clear request yet. Clarifying the purpose helps them prepare and helps you judge whether an introduction makes sense.

What you can say

  • Let's get clear on the purpose before I reach out.
  • What would you hope to learn or move forward through that conversation?
  • If it looks like a fit, I'll check whether they're open to an introduction.

Try not to

  • Promising an introduction before understanding the request.
  • Sharing contact details without permission.
