How to respond when a customer asks for your manager
A customer asks to speak to your manager because they feel the current conversation is going nowhere.
What they might say
- “Put your manager on the call.”
- “I need someone who can actually make a decision.”
- “I've already explained this to three people.”
What's usually behind it
Your customer may need authority you do not have, or evidence that someone owns the problem. You can make the handoff useful by carrying their context forward and being clear about availability.
What you can say
- I hear you want this escalated.
- What decision do you need from my manager?
- I'll check who's available and pass along what you've already shared.
Try not to
- Arguing that a manager will say the same thing.
- Transferring them without sharing the context.
